A Call for Defiance and Reconstruction
Proudly maintaining its distinction as Türkiye’s first and only community-led conference in a medical domain (and, most likely, in the wider region as well), #HIVIstanbul has, over the years, transcended the conventional boundaries of a conference. It has evolved into the ultimate agora for rights advocacy and the forging of discourse in the HIV/AIDS arena. Speaking directly from that very ground, #HIVIstanbul2026 extends a proposition to all who consider themselves natural stakeholders in the HIV/AIDS response: Let us collectively define the language, the stance, and the trajectory of #AIDSActivismReignites. Let this new wave of activism rise from Istanbul, from the Bosphorus!
In 2021, under the motto and vision of #HIVWillLose (defiance), #HIVIstanbul set out despite attempts at deterrence—warnings that "while physicians hold massive congresses in this field, a small civil society organization and community could never orchestrate such an endeavor." It proved its mettle in its very first edition. In 2022, declaring #CommunityHasTheAnswer (taking initiative), it stepped up in a climate where even civil society hesitated to assume responsibility, making it unmistakably clear to all stakeholders exactly whose duty it was to lead. By 2023, asking #AreWeReallyEqual (disrupting the comfort zone), it cut straight to the heart of the matter and unsettled many complacent minds.
The discourse built across these three editions was so profound that it drew in highly esteemed scientists—such as Alison Rodger and Pietro Vernazza, who had previously declined to attend any scientific event in Türkiye—alongside deeply influential activists from our country, our region, and across the globe. This collective voice transcended borders, inspiring even international campaigns.
In 2026—after a two-year hiatus dictated by financial constraints—we are starting anew. Fusing the unique culture and institutional memory of #HIVIstanbul with the profound experience of our first three editions, we are turning a bold, original, and courageous page. Declaring #AIDSActivismReignites, we are taking up the mantle for #HIVIstanbul2026.
You know all too well from your own experiences that we are navigating an era of intersecting crises and deepening uncertainty. This is precisely why, in these difficult times, there is a desperate need for visionary voices unafraid to speak for those who cannot, to act for those paralyzed, and to proclaim the truth—even at the risk of alienation.
Because we must accept a simple reality: we cannot dry today's laundry with yesterday's sun; we cannot solve today’s problems with yesterday’s tools. This is exactly why we must radically dismantle the current methodology of the global HIV movement—a movement that has been stripped of its identity, devoid of its soul, and cowed into submission; one that has sacrificed activism to bureaucratic administration, and truth-telling to institutional PR. We must overthrow the methods that continue to produce chronic failures. Our call is definitive: We are speaking to all visionary actors who accurately read the global trajectory and seek solutions through concrete, localized action.
To civil society organizations, activists, the academy, the medical community, and youth-led initiatives: Let us construct the new character of HIV/AIDS activism together. Let us draw its language and set its course, shoulder to shoulder, at #HIVIstanbul2026.
